Ariel, Amazon Parrot, Greeter
Ariel is our resident Amazon Parrot. She has been greeting clients at our clinic for over 22 years. At over 30 years old, Ariel has learned to say a number of things including her name, polly want a cracker and hello. When not greeting clients, she loves eating peanuts and corn on the cob and playing with her toys. She has an eye for the guys so be sure to say hello, just watch your fingers!
Dr. Duncan Augustine
Born in New Jersey and raised in Michigan, Dr. Augustine moved to Amherst County shortly after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania. After working with several local veterinarians and falling in love with Amherst's small town charm, Dr. Augustine decided to open his own practice. His dream became a reality when Laurel Stone Veterinary Hospital opened in the spring of 1989. Dr. Augustine is also an alumnus of Davidson College in Davidson, North Carolina where he studied Biology and met his lovely wife Janice. Together they have two successful daughters, Jessica and Shannon. Today they share their home with several fur kids, two humane society rescue pups, Cecelia and Natasha and two kitties Kinsey and Josie. In his free time, Dr. Augustine serves as president of the Central Virginia Land Conservancy, a non profit organization that promotes protection and conservation of forests, farmlands, water, and other natural resources.
Terry Hunter, Office Manager
Terry was born and raised in Madison Heights where he grew up helping his dad care for a menagerie of farm animals. After high school, Terry attended Virginia Tech where he earned a degree in Finance. He spent many years living in Roanoke and working as a banker before returning to Amherst County in 1981 to open Monelison Animal Hospital with his brother, Dr. G.V. Hunter. Terry came to Laurel Stone in 1995 after almost 15 years at Monelison to serve as office manager. He and his wonderful wife Judy, live in Amherst along with their cat, Ollie. They have one daughter, Jenny, and a sweet little granddaughter, Chloe Beth. Terry enjoys traveling and spends a lot of time in Belize and Mexico. He has visited several countries in Europe and is always planning his next big trip. He spends his free time with family and enjoys playing Bridge with friends.
Dr. Douglas has been working part time here at Laurel Stone for over 8 years now. She recieved her BS in Biology and DVM from Virginia Tech. She lives in Bedford with her husband of over 30 years and her children Emily and Alex. She also has a menagerie of pets that include her dogs Foxy, Abby and Carly, cats Toby, Tiger, and Clay Boy and several lizards, snakes, and fish.
